EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess upsetting memories in a safe and controlled way. During treatment, the therapist guides the client through sets of eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation), which are believed to reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories. Over time, these memories become less vivid and distressing.
EMDR does not require talking in detail about the trauma or completing homework between sessions. It focuses on changing the way the memory is stored in the brain, helping you feel less triggered in the present. With proper support, EMDR can be a powerful tool for healing and building resilience.
We offer private EMDR therapy in London, at our Kensington clinic and online.
EMDR is commonly used to treat symptoms that stem from trauma or distressing experiences.
You may benefit from EMDR if you experience:
If you have experienced something distressing and find that it still affects your thoughts, emotions, or behaviour, EMDR may help you process it and move forward with your life.
EMDR is a clinically proven, NICE-recommended therapy for PTSD and is also being increasingly used to treat anxiety, phobias, and other mental health challenges. It is available through some NHS services and private therapists across the UK.
The EMDR Process Includes:
History-taking & preparation: Understanding your needs and building trust before therapy begins.
Assessment & target identification: Identifying key memories or events to focus on.
Desensitisation phase: Using eye movements or taps while recalling aspects of the memory.
Reprocessing & installation: Helping your brain integrate the experience in a healthier way.
Body scan & closure: Checking for lingering physical sensations and ensuring emotional safety.
Who it’s for: EMDR is suitable for adults, children and young people. It is particularly useful for those who have struggled to make progress with traditional talking therapies.
Speak to your GP or a qualified EMDR therapist to learn whether it may be a good fit for your needs.
EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories, so they feel less vivid and overwhelming. NICE recommends EMDR for post-traumatic stress, and it is also widely used for anxiety, phobias and other difficulties linked to past experiences.
Nick is an EMDR Advanced Practitioner. Before any memory processing, we spend time on preparation, so that you have tools to manage difficult feelings and stay in control. We use EMDR for trauma, PTSD and anxiety, and alongside addiction treatment where past experiences fuel drinking or drug use.

After a period of preparation, you briefly focus on a memory while following bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements or taps. This helps the memory to be processed so that it becomes less distressing. You stay awake and in control throughout.
EMDR can help if past experiences still feel overwhelming or keep affecting your life today. At your initial consultation we discuss whether EMDR or another approach suits you best.
For a single traumatic event, NICE guidance suggests around 8 to 12 sessions. Multiple or long-standing difficulties usually need longer. We review progress with you regularly.
