Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is a common mental health condition that affects millions of people in the UK. While it’s normal to feel anxious occasionally, persistent or overwhelming anxiety can interfere with daily life, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including:

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Ongoing worry about everyday issues like health, money, or work.

Panic Disorder: Sudden, intense fear and physical symptoms like a racing heart or shortness of breath.

Social Anxiety Disorder: Extreme fear of being judged or embarrassed in social situations.

Phobias: Intense fear of specific things or situations, such as flying or spiders.

OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder): Unwanted thoughts and compulsive behaviours.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder): Anxiety following traumatic events.
Separation Anxiety: More common in children but can affect adults too.

Anxiety can affect anyone and is not a sign of weakness. With the right treatment, it is manageable—and recovery is possible.

How We Treat Anxiety

We offer our clients cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) alongside Psychotherapy.

CBT is a psychotherapeutic approach which has been developed and adjusted over the last thirty to forty years and within that period it has grown increasingly popular and is recognised worldwide. An essential part of the treatment is to examine the thoughts and beliefs connected to our moods, behaviours, bodily sensations, and to the events in our lives. By doing so, we can become more aware of dysfunctional patterns of thinking which are associated with emotional and behavioural problems and work to challenge, and in time modify these, into more constructive ways. EMDR is a remarkable treatment method used to heal the symptoms of depression.

Signs & Symptoms

Anxiety can build gradually and become overwhelming over time. It often affects both your mind and body, sometimes making it hard to recognise as a treatable condition.

Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Constant worry or nervousness
  • Feeling “on edge” or easily startled
  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • Physical tension, fatigue, or restlessness
  • Racing heartbeat or shortness of breath
  • Avoiding situations that cause fear or discomfort

Recovery

Living with anxiety can feel exhausting, but effective support is available. Recovery means learning to manage symptoms, understand your triggers, and develop tools to cope with life’s challenges.

Treatment often includes talking therapies like CBT, EMDR, and psychotherapy. These approaches can help you reframe thoughts, process past trauma, and break the cycle of anxiety.

Support from professionals, loved ones, and therapeutic communities plays a vital role in recovery. You don’t have to face it alone—lasting change is possible with the right help.

Treatment Options

Anxiety treatment is highly effective and often tailored to your individual needs. In the UK, support is available through the NHS or privately.

Psychotherapy (Talking Therapies):

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy): Helps you challenge unhelpful thoughts and develop practical coping strategies

  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) – Helps reshape thoughts and behaviours
  • Exposure Therapy: Gradually helps you face and reduce fear in specific situations.

  • ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy): Encourages accepting anxious thoughts while taking action in line with your values.

  • Mindfulness-Based Therapy: Uses breathing and awareness techniques to reduce stress.

Medication:

  • SSRIs (e.g., sertraline, fluoxetine)

  • SNRIs (e.g., venlafaxine)

  • Benzodiazepines (used short-term due to risk of dependence)

Speak to your GP for an assessment and referral. Self-referral to talking therapies is also available through the NHS in many areas.
